15 METRE POOL ACTIVITIES
PARENT & CHILD CLASSES ‘Parent and Child’ lessons for babies under 2 years of age teach basic water awareness, acclimatizing even the youngest child for fun and hassle-free learning, familiarising them to the swimming environment whilst providing fun time with other babies. Babies learn to put their face in the water and blow bubbles, bob under the water, kick on their tummy, lie on their tummy and their back, which all leads to confidence to be able to learn to swim when they get a bit older. These classes also help parents to have the confidence to be able to take their baby swimming themselves.
LESSONS The minimum age for students to undertake lessons is 2 years of age. Lessons for 2 – 4 year old’s are conducted every weekday morning, weekday afternoons and on Saturday for pre-school age children or younger. Lessons are of 30 minutes duration with a maximum of 4 to a class. Most students will be acquiring the skills for our Tommy Turtle Certificates Pink, Blue, Green and Orange. Lessons for older children are conducted every weekday commencing at 4pm. Lessons are of 30 minutes duration with a maximum of 5 to a class. Students are taught the skills relevant to our Swimming and Water Safety Awards Levels 1 through 4.
25 METRE POOL ACTIVITIES DEEP WATER CLASSES This is a water safety course designed to teach children to survive and have fun in deep water. This course is equally important for anyone timid about deeper water. The course teaches safe diving and entry techniques, how to execute an ‘unexpected entry’, under water swimming, survival strokes and survival skills and much, much more. It is one of the qualifying criteria for children undertaking Swimming and Water Safety Award Level 4. It must be satisfactorily completed before joining a Level 5 Group in the 25 metre pool.
LEVEL 5 GROUP
Level 5 Group is for students who have achieved Level 4 and wish to obtain Level 5. Students in this Group will develop the fitness to enable them to achieve the Level 5 criteria through swimming longer distances than can be achieved in lessons.
LEVEL 6 & 7 GROUP
Level 6 & 7 Group is for students who have achieved Swimming and Water Safety Award Level 5. Members of this Group practise the skills required to achieve Levels 6 and 7. Endurance and stamina are developed through swimming longer distances than can be achieved in the 15 m. pool.
PROFICIENCY (PRO) SQUAD
Pro Squad focuses on 3 outcomes: swimming FAST, swimming LONG, and swimming SAFELY. 1. swimming FAST Pro squad is aimed at school level swimming with the emphasis being on 50 m swims. Stroke correction, starts, turns, relay change-overs, are a few of the competitive skills which are taught and practised in this squad. 2. swimming LONG Apart from proficiency in sprints, Squad members also train to complete, non-stop, 1 km, 3 km and 5 km swims. Twice a year, they have the opportunity to undertake these swims, under supervision, to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement. 3. swimming SAFELY The water safety and survival skills learnt in Levels 1 to 7, are regularly practised to ensure squad members retain these skills which may, one day, prevent a drowning tragedy. The Certificate Levels are not tested in Pro Squad, but members who want to acquire and be tested on the water safety skills of higher awards (up to Level 7), will have the option of attending a weekly Level 5 or Level 6/7 Group.
